October 2011
As you know, Steve Jobs, Co-Founder, CEO and Chairman of Apple,
Inc., passed away on October 5th. I am a huge
Apple user, fan and admirer. My first thought is for his
family. My heart goes out to them. My second thought
is, what might have been that now won't be? With Steve gone,
what will we be missing out on in the future? Surely there
are other bright minds in Apple and around the world, but Steve had
brilliance, vision, determination and massive financial resources
at his disposal ... a hard combination to replace.

Labor productivity in the non-farm business sector fell by 0.7
percent in Q2 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
This follows a 0.6 percent fall in productivity in Q1. The fall in
productivity reflects low output growth of 1.3 percent compared to
increased hours worked of 2.0 percent. At the same time, unit labor
costs have risen by 3.3 percent. Falling productivity and rising
costs can put a strain on companies' cash flows because they have
to pay out more to cover their overheads while generating less
income.

staff and talks about the role of marketing. This may be an
internal staff speech, but Jobs reveals some key insights about the
role of marketing and the true genius of what Wozniak noted was
Jobs' "greatest strength."

As a business leader, you can't stay where you are and stay
competitive. A good leader never fully arrives. The destination is
always changing. A good leader will constantly evolve with
the changing times. Developing quality products, having good
customer service and offering your clients good value are
musts. Your business may have garnered a good reputation
to-date, have loyal employees and devoted customers, but it can't
rest on those attributes alone.

With the recent 10th anniversary of the September
11th terrorist attacks and the estimated $39.5 billion
in losses it is not only important to reflect back on the tragic
events but it is also important to look to the future and assess
the steps that the United States Government has taken to protect
its citizens. The attacks on U.S. soil resulted in some major
changes to our everyday life but often overlooked is the impact
these events had on insurers and you, the insured.
